Top 5 "Work from Home" Virtual Meeting Rookie Mistakes

You’re here for the numbered list, not a long intro…let’s go!

  1. Insert the “How do you _______?” person. We get it…this work from home thing is new for many but let’s get with the program people. Spend some time learning (insert virtual platform) before you lead a meeting this week…or any week for that matter. YouTube and Google aren’t affected by COVID-19…use them or ask for help BEFORE the meeting starts.

  2. Nostrils for daaaaaaaays. I’m going to need everyone to trim their nostril hair, grab a stack of books to set their laptop on or get one of those cool-ergonomic-tablet-holding-arm-thingys that clip to your desk. If possible, find a way to elevate your machine so you are eye-level with the camera. It creates a more enjoyable experience for all!

  3. MUTE. - PRESS. THE. MUTE. BUTTON. When you’re not talking, virtual etiquette is to press the mute button. It limits feedback, allows everyone to hear and eliminates abrupt noises so people mistakenly think they are cutting someone off. It can also save you from some very embarrassing moments when you think just because you are at home in your pajamas, no one can hear your [verbal] thoughts.

  4. Charge often. The worst feeling during a meeting is realizing mid-presentation or conversation that your laptop or phone is about to die. Now you’re scrambling to figure out where your charger is and scared to open the door because your two year old is screaming his head off downstairs (no this hasn’t happened to me before…why do you ask?!). Make sure to charge your stuff in-between meetings.

  5. People have been working from home/remotely for ages. This isn’t new. You aren’t the first. Ask a friend about best practices. If you’re a parent and trying to figure out how to do this with kids - send an email to that remote co-worker or search online. There are plenty of resources. Use as many online tools as possible that make your world more efficient and structured. It’s okay to phone a friend…because…hey…that’s all you can do anyway!
